A Classic Irish Gift: The Claddagh Ring
Monday, February 1st, 2010Many people who are fans of the Irish traditions, or just think they are Irish are under the impression that the Irish spirit involves four leaf clovers and lots of green color. Although these may be part of Irish traditions, the history goes so much deeper than that. This is something to consider when giving a gift to a person of Irish origin.
Something that any true Irish will appreciate is a Claddagh Ring. For those of you who are unfamiliar, a Claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring that dates back to the 17th century. Physically, it is of classic shape with the detail being two hands clasping a heart and topped with a crown. The point of the heart is very symbolic in Claddagh rings. When the point of the heart is pointing in, it shows that the owner is in a relationship, as the point is towards the owner’s heart. When the point of the heart is pointing out, it shows the owner is not involved with anyone.
Traditionally, the Claddagh ring was given to a significant other to show love or affection, or even worn as a wedding band. But today, it is an Irish gift that can be given to anyone, but most popular with women. It is a ring that has withstood the test of time and almost all true Irish women own one, thus it is a perfect gift for perhaps a young woman who has not received one yet.
